Today (23 April) marks the date that William Shakespeare’s birthday is traditionally celebrated.
And there’s no better place to enjoy his legacy than right here in Knowsley.
Prescot is proudly home to the Shakespeare North Playhouse, a landmark cultural venue that opened in 2022 and has quickly become a much‑loved part of the town.
The playhouse is inspired by a historic indoor theatre that once stood in Prescot in Shakespeare’s own lifetime, where his plays are believed to have been performed with the support of the Earl of Derby at Knowsley Hall.
Since opening the theatre has cemented its position as a leading theatre, as well as a community hub, providing life-changing opportunities for the people of Knowsley, the Liverpool City Region and beyond.
- Over 370,000 people have visited the building.
- 44,708 children and young people have seen shows or taken part in workshops and events.
- Over 24,500 Pay What You Decide Tickets for those living in priority postcode areas in Knowsley.
- Shakespeare North Playhouse has won and been shortlisted for 38 Awards including Theatre Building of the Year in 2023.
