A new mural has been installed at Huyton Train Station providing a warm welcome to visitors and the local community.
Artist, Luke Crump was commissioned to design the mural as a legacy to Knowsley’s year as Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture in 2022.
Luke has worked with children from five Huyton Primary Schools to create the fun and creative artwork which can be found on platform 4 at the station.
The theme of the mural is ‘Stories of People, Places and Magic’ and celebrates everything the community loves about Huyton. Throughout Knowsley’s year as borough of Culture, stories of Knowsley, its people, heritage and history were shared and celebrated.
The mural also includes some famous faces from the world of sport and music alongside well-known Huyton landmarks and buildings which are all weaved together with Lukes unique style.
You will also see some special portraits of the young people involved embedded in the mural.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Communities commented:
“This mural is a wonderful addition to the train station, it’s fun and exciting and will help to provide a warm welcome to everyone arriving in Huyton and will hopefully make them stop to take a closer look.
“It’s also a wonderful legacy for our year as Borough of Culture, public art installations like this really help to capture the stories and memories of the local community and create something for everyone to enjoy.”
Artist, Luke Crump commented: “It has been a pleasure creating this piece alongside pupils from local schools to celebrate Knowsley’s rich history, diverse landmarks and famous faces!
“I hope the finished mural will brighten up Huyton station and be enjoyed by all for many years to come.”
Joan Nickson, Safety Reviewer & Audit Manager at Northern commented: “Artwork on our stations and the collaboration with the local community provides immense value to the Northern network and the local neighbourhood, it assists in developing early relationships and education towards safety on the railway.
“Knowsley Council have developed a strong relationship with Northern and the creativity which is demonstrated on Stations is something enjoyed by all and to be encouraged, At Northern we look forward to future artwork on the stations and thanks Sarah and the team for working with us.”

Huyton-born artist John Culshaw created a 600 sq ft artwork on the side of Huyton Library which celebrates local heritage and the many creative writers, storytellers and musicians from the area.
And in Huyton subway there is a mural created by artists Grennan and Seprandio, in partnership with the local community, depicting memories of rail travel.
