Despite the best efforts of the weather, Prescot’s Elizabethan Fayre (on Saturday, 7 June) proved to be an overwhelming success.
Impressive crowds braved the rain showers to enjoy a day of historical delight and captivating entertainment.
Families huddled under umbrellas and donned raincoats, as they honed their skills at archery, tried their hand at new circus tricks or created clay pots and candles.
Visitors were drawn into the enchanting world of Elizabethan England, as dancing and music filled the air, ancient stories with ‘Terrible Tudor Tales’ were shared, and they created their own folklores with the hilarious ‘The Story Forge’.
The dynamic fire jesters captivated crowds with their impressive fire dancing skills and the delightful Bubble Fairy, with her colossal, shimmering bubbles was a hit with the younger (and older!) guests.
The Fayre provided a wonderful opportunity for visitors to learn more about Prescot’s unique place in history, particularly that it was the only town outside of London to host a purpose-built, free-standing theatre in Elizabethan times – a legacy proudly continued by the award-winning Shakespeare North Playhouse, a testament to Prescot’s enduring love of storytelling.
The theatre opened its doors and welcomed families for an interactive exhibition and behind the scenes tours of the building, while the kitchen served a selection of Tudor inspired snacks and treats.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, commented: “The turnout for Prescot’s Elizabethan Fayre, even with the rain, was absolutely fantastic and truly heartwarming. It’s a testament to the incredible community spirit in Prescot and the enduring appeal of this wonderful event. Seeing so many families enjoying the activities and entertainment regardless of the weather, was wonderful.”
