Knowsley Archives Service is delighted to announce the successful transfer of the significant British Insulated Callender’s Cables (BICC) Collection from National Museums Liverpool.
The collection, which comprises of invaluable historical records, has returned to its roots in Knowsley, the heartland of what was once one of the borough’s largest employers.
The extensive collection offers a fascinating insight into the history of BICC, a global industry leader in cable manufacturing. It includes a wealth of material such as business minutes and records, job cards, staff magazines documenting social activities, and a rich array of photographs and film reels. These records chart the company’s significant impact both locally and internationally.
Following the closure of the main BICC factory in Knowsley, the collection was carefully preserved by National Museums Liverpool. This momentous move back to Knowsley marks an exciting new chapter for the collection, bringing it closer to the community it represents.
Knowsley Archives Service is now embarking on the crucial task of making the collection accessible to the public. Plans are underway to apply for funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to undertake a comprehensive cataloguing project.
The Archives Service aims to develop a community engagement programme specifically focused on the Prescot community and former employees of BICC and their families, ensuring these vital historical records are brought to life.
Councillor Jayne Lonergan, Cabinet Member for Resources, commented: “The return of the BICC Collection to Knowsley is fantastic news. BICC played a vital role in the history and development of our borough, providing employment for generations of families. This collection is a treasure trove of memories and information, and we are determined to ensure it is preserved and made accessible for everyone to explore and learn from. We look forward to engaging with former employees and the wider community to unlock the stories held within these records.”
