Today, Shakespeare North Playhouse celebrates its fourth anniversary, marking four remarkable years since the curtain first rose on Knowsley’s world-class cultural venue.
The Playhouse opened its doors in July 2022 as part of Knowsley’s year as Liverpool city Region Borough of Culture. The opening event attracted thousands of local people and was televised on local and national news to an audience of 6.6 million.
Since then, the Playhouse has become a beacon for arts, culture and community engagement, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors and playing a significant role in the ongoing regeneration of Prescot.
The venue celebrates Prescot’s unique links to Elizabethan theatre and William Shakespeare and was delivered by Knowsley Council during the Covid-19 pandemic with support from public and charitable funders.
By March 2026, more than 370,000 people had visited the venue, while tens of thousands of children and young people had taken part in performances, workshops, and learning activities. The theatre has also earned national recognition, winning and being shortlisted for nearly 40 awards, including Theatre Building of the Year.
Through its successful Pay What You Decide scheme, thousands of Knowsley residents have been able to experience theatre, buying tickets from as little as £5, ensuring that local people remain at the heart of the venue’s success.
An independent evaluation published earlier this year found that Shakespeare North Playhouse attracts around 100,000 visitors annually and generates £12.4 million in visitor expenditure across the Liverpool City Region each year. The report also highlighted the venue’s contribution to job creation, local business growth, and the wider regeneration of Prescot town centre.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, praised the Playhouse’s achievements over the last four years. She said:
“Shakespeare North Playhouse continues to demonstrate the positive impact that culture can have on our communities, providing opportunities for residents of all ages, supporting education, improving wellbeing, and contributing to the regeneration of Prescot. We are incredibly proud of everything that has been achieved since the venue opened and look forward to seeing it continue to inspire, entertain, and bring people together for many years to come.”
Over the past four years, audiences have enjoyed an extraordinary range of performances, from Shakespearean classics and contemporary drama to live music, comedy, community events, and family activities. Alongside its acclaimed productions, the Playhouse has become a vibrant gathering place for local people, schools, artists, and visitors from across the UK and beyond.
As Shakespeare North Playhouse enters its fifth year, its mission remains unchanged: to create an inclusive, welcoming space where culture is accessible to everyone and where creativity can inspire future generations.
Four years on from its spectacular opening, the Playhouse continues to demonstrate the transformative power of arts and culture, bringing communities together and helping put Prescot firmly on the cultural map.
Happy fourth birthday, Shakespeare North Playhouse – here’s to many more years of magical moments.
